On March 14th we hosted our 2nd Rookie Career Accelerator (RCA) Learning Lab at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Gale Mansion. The Learning Lab focused on Empowered Communication with speaker Dr. Amelia Reigstad of Amelia Reigstad Effective Communication Consulting & Coaching.
The Accelerator members had completed a communication assessment as pre-work, and the night began with a discussion of communication styles. In small groups, Accelerator members shared their dominant communication styles - Director, Expresser, Thinker, or Harmonizer - and whether they felt their assessed style matched their perception of themselves. It was a great tool to get people talking and reflecting on how they communicate.
Throughout the rest of the learning lab, Dr. Reigstad facilitated discussion on gender differences in communication, and how these can show up in workplace environments. Cohort members had the opportunity to discuss their experiences with linguistic styles, non-verbal communication, emotions, and conversation rituals in their workplaces.
The learning lab wrapped up with engaging discussions on how to show up authentically, and confidently. We ended the evening composing letters to ourselves that will be sent to us by Dr. Reigstad down the road for a touch of inspiration. The support system this cohort has built with one another is energizing to be around and left us feeling inspired.
